Being veggie nowadays is so much easier than it has been in the past. There is more variety, delicious meat-free meat options and more places are offering better vegetarian and vegan options. But it can still be a faff to figure out where you can go, especially if you’re in a group with meat eaters. So here are a few of my favourite spots in the city that will please vegetarians and their omni friends.
1. Shambles kitchen

Not exactly a hidden treasure but it’s well known for a reason. Whether you’ve got dietary requirements or picky eaters, if you’re in a group where everyone wants something different, then this is a great option. Just remember to wear a jacket.
2. Goji’s Vegetarian Deli
Offering take away or eat in service, Goji’s is a repeatedly tried and tested favourite of mine. As an added benefit you will be supporting a local York company with your custom. I highly recommend the Goji hot dog and the fruit crumble with oat cream.
3. Coconut Lagoon
Indian food is usually a safe bet when it comes to finding vegetarian food, especially when they consider themselves authentic in any way. They have plenty of veggie options from all sections of the menu.
4. Donner Summer at Spark

Sparks is a relatively new addition to York and it has quickly become known as a local hotspot. Popular with everyone, Sparks has loads of different food spots but if you’re vegan or veggie, head straight to Donner Summer’s for kebabs, hot dogs and more.
5. Roots
Want a proper British pub meal yet keep getting faced with plates of nicely arranged parsnips? Try Roots (pun intended)! With a 5 star rating, right in the city centre, they are certainly not short on options.
6. Double Dutch Pancake House
www.doubledutchpancakehouse.com
Much on their regular menu is vegetarian with a full menu dedicated to vegan options. A very cosy vibe and friendly staff along with a student, NHS and armed forces discount make it a great first date spot.
7. Evil Eye
Because even vegetarians need to feel fancy with a cocktail now and then. With a wacky vibe and plenty of seating, all the ingredients in both their classic and quirky cocktails are vegetarian-friendly as are most of their wines. No one said this list was just for food.
8. The Cat’s Whiskers
www.thecatswhiskersyork.co.uk/
Cat Cafes are one of the latest crazes and York has its own. If you eat eggs this one is definitely for you. If you have a cat allergy, not so meow-ch.
9. Source
With a dedicated veggie menu, vegan menu and options in the starters, if you don’t like burgers, this will change your mind. Especially considering they’re available on Deliveroo.
10. Partisan
Again, this one involves eggs, especially on the daytime menu. But if that’s not a problem for you, then you will love this quirky spot. If you don’t eat eggs then you still have options and some very tasty ones too.
11. Ambiente
Serving tapas with two York locations, there is a variety of food options available and their extensive wine list also contains vegetarian and vegan options. Has a cosy, intimate vibe that will make you feel at home.
12. True Story
Described as a vegan’s heaven, this cafe serves cakes that your most committed, anti-vegan friend will begrudgingly admit are delicious. They are also available as space to book as well as having yoga classes above the cafe.
